Aever Clinics - Laser Hair Removal

An Intro to Laser Hair Removal at Aever Clinics

In the quest for permanently smooth, hair-free skin, ever more people turn to laser hair removal. Why? Traditional hair removal methods cost a lot, hurt a lot, and don’t last. In this blog post, we will share everything you need to know about what laser hair removal is, the benefits, the current state of the market, what types of lasers are out there, and how long it takes to see results.

The Science Behind Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a (highly successful) method of permanent hair removal. It operates on the principle of selective photothermolysis. High-intensity light is focused on hair follicles, absorbed by the pigment in the hair, and converted into heat. This targeted heat damages the hair follicle, inhibiting future hair growth without harming the surrounding skin. It's a precise and effective process that tackles hair growth literally at the root.

The Laser Hair Removal Experience

Wondering what to expect during a laser hair removal treatment? Fear not! It's a non-invasive procedure where a handheld laser device emits concentrated light pulses onto the treatment area. The sensation is often described as mild stinging or tingling, yet overall minimal discomfort, and treatment sessions are relatively quick, depending on the treatment area.

Laser Hair Removal: The current state of the market

There is a widespread assumption, somewhat due to the current market, that laser hair removal is expensive, unaffordable, and simply not attainable for most of us. That is where Aever Clinics comes in - we disrupt the Dutch hair removal market by offering you this permanent technique at a fraction of competitors’s prices. We want to create change, laser clinics shouldn’t break the bank! Check out our prices here.

What lasers are out there?

We get it, everyone is shouting from the rooftops: We have the best lasers for laser hair removal. But who is right? Let’s look at the facts. There are several different types:

IPL (Intense Pulse Light): While not a laser, IPL devices are often used for hair removal. They emit a broad spectrum of light, but they are much less precise than other laser systems. Another issue with this technology: You may experience a temporary hair reduction, but after 1 or 2 years and multiple sessions, hair will regrow and regain its former strength. Basically, IPL should not even be considered a permanent hair removal method.

The Diode laser: This method involves emitting a concentrated beam of light that is selectively absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in hair follicles. These lasers can be used for various skin types, although darker skin tones may experience a higher risk of pigmentation changes or burns, as the laser can also target melanin in the skin. Diode lasers claim to provide fast treatments, though this is a misconception: First, a conductive gel is applied. The laser is then moved back and forth over the skin. Afterwards, the gel needs to be removed. This gel-application-treatment-removal process often doubles to triples the treatment time, meaning you actually waste more time than you save.

Moreover, you will need about twice as many treatments as with the Alexandrite or the Nd:YAG, resulting in double the time and cost. Why is that? Diode lasers are not effective on lighter or finer hair, as the treatment relies on the absorption of laser energy by melanin. Additionally, Diode laser treatments may cause temporary redness, swelling, or discomfort. In short, they are not a great choice, but unfortunately, they are often promoted as such. Let’s compare with the best on the market:

The Alexandrite: This laser is effective for light to olive skin tones and is known for providing fast and comfortable treatments.

The Nd:YAG: Suitable for all skin types, including darker skin tones, Nd:YAG lasers are known for their deep penetration and safety profile.

Both these lasers emit specific wavelengths of light that are well-absorbed by melanin, the pigment responsible for hair colour. The Alexandrite laser typically operates at a wavelength of 755 nanometers, while Nd:YAG lasers can have wavelengths around 1064 nanometers. These wavelengths target the melanin in hair follicles effectively. Despite being very powerful, both lasers are known for their safety when used by experienced and skilled practitioners. They are designed to minimise the risk of skin damage while effectively targeting hair follicles. Another great asset of the Alexandrite and the Nd:YAG is their treatment speed: they are known for their high repetition rate, allowing for faster treatment times. This is great especially when treating larger areas of the body. Additionally, their clinical effectiveness has been demonstrated in dozens of scientific studies (for example, here and here). The choice between Alexandrite and Nd:YAG may depend on factors such as skin type, hair colour, and the specific requirements of the individual.

The Best Laser Hair Removal Device

So which device do we use? We use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus, a device that combines the Alexandrite and the Nd:YAG. That way, we can treat all skin tones and 99% of hair colours. Compared to IPL, the Diode, and other devices, the GentleMax Pro Plus has greater peak power, and faster, shorter pulse durations for addressing finer hair. You will thus spend less time, fewer treatments, and consequently less money on the most successful laser hair removal treatment on the market. Our mission is to make this treatment even more affordable, and that is why we offer you the best technology at the lowest price ever seen in this market.

Laser Hair Removal Market Leader: Candela

Fun fact: The Candela Gentle Series has been in use for over 25 years, being constantly refined, and its effectiveness scientifically tested and proven in over 150 peer-reviewed studies. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is the successful evolution of this market leading laser family. Its predecessor, the GentleMax Pro, was the most used laser hair removal device by dermatologists worldwide. After receiving several upgrades, the GentleMax Pro Plus was born: With larger laser spot sizes, shorter pulse durations of only 2ms down from 3ms (meaning even fine hair can easily be treated), higher repetition rates and significantly more energy than competitor products, the GentleMax Pro Plus is the undefeated number 1 laser hair removal device worldwide.

Power doesn’t mean less comfort: The GentleMax Pro Plus has an integrated cooling system that makes your treatment not only more comfortable, but it takes the heat out of the skin, thus reducing the risk of side effects or burning. Afterwards, Aloe Vera gel is applied for immediate soothing and continued cooling of the skin - the added bonus? This also hydrates and nourishes your skin.

The Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Why is laser hair removal the best hair removal method? In short: It will give you permanent results, and it saves you significant amounts of time and money. Laser hair removal provides long-lasting results compared to traditional methods such as shaving, waxing, threading, sugaring or epilating.

Comparing Laser Hair Removal to Shaving, Waxing, Threading, and Sugaring

Let’s compare: Shaving is a common and quick method that involves cutting hair at the skin's surface with a razor. It's a temporary painless solution, as hair regrows quickly, usually within a few days. Waxing pulls hair out from the roots; results can last a few weeks. Threading is an ancient technique that uses twisted cotton threads to pull out hair from the follicle. Sugaring, similar to waxing, involves a mixture of sugar, lemon, and water to remove hair. Epilating uses an electronic device that mechanically grasps and pulls out multiple hairs simultaneously. They all primarily target the visible hair shaft and remove hair from the follicle, but they do not permanently damage the hair follicle itself. And what’s worse, they are painful, and often cause ingrown hairs and irritated skin.

In contrast, laser hair removal targets and damages the hair follicle directly, thus leading to permanent hair reduction. The sensation is much more tolerable than these hair plucking methods, and the best part: no ingrown hair, no irritated skin, only silky smooth - permanent - softness.

Laser Hair Removal Benefits Summarised

Laser hair removal is versatile, effective, and suitable for all skin types. Additionally, it's a real time-saver: You will only require 8 to 12 sessions to enjoy a permanent hair reduction of over 90%. All you need after that are annual maintenance sessions. Compare that to your monthly waxing appointment or daily shaving chore in the shower.

And most impressively, it is a cost-saver! Yes, it may seem like an investment at first but did you know that lifetime costs for waxing add up to roughly €25,000? Shaving can cost you over €6,000 over the course of your life (not to mention the effort and time). Laser hair removal, on the other hand, will only cost you up to €2,000 in total.

Laser Hair Removal Results - Before and After

The magic happens after 6 to 10 sessions. Patients often notice a reduction in hair growth after the first few treatments. As sessions progress, the treated area becomes smoother, and hair growth becomes more and more sparse with each treatment. Treatment 1 to 2: The shedding phase. Hair regrowth is normal but the hair will start to feel softer. Treatment 3 to 6: The slowdown. Hair growth and hair thickness start to reduce significantly. Treatment 6 to 10: The light at the end of the tunnel! Hair regrowth is remarkably reduced, with “bold” patches gaining in size. The hair also becomes lighter in colour. Treatment 10 to 12: The grand finale - hello, hair-free carefree life! From here on out, you might only need an annual maintenance session.

Time to bid adieu to razors and waxes, and say hello to the brilliance of laser hair removal. If you have any other questions, we are here for you. We are happy to show you the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus at one of our locations, and to answer all of your questions and concerns in person.
